Abstract

According to social and personal psychology, religiosity and personality are related to attitudes towards various social groups, but there is still little research exploring how these two aspects, especially dark personality, might contribute to social attitudes. This study examined the role of religiosity and Dark Tetrad traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism) on prejudice toward non-Muslim groups in Indonesia. Participants consisted of 111 Muslim students in Yogyakarta. We used a correlational research design with multiple regression analysis. The results showed that Dark Tetrad traits played a role in prejudice toward non-Muslim groups (p = 0.03 ; p<0.05), while religiosity did not (p = 0.362). The current study presented new evidence that aspects of personality contribute more to inter-religious prejudice. The implication is that it is important to understand the differences between religious groups by considering the individual factors. In addition, these findings can be used to facilitate policy integration at various community levels and support adaptive decision-making in daily life regarding diversity in Indonesia.
