Abstract

Research on the interaction between collective identity and memetic media often focuses on the drivers of the interaction. Meanwhile, this research seeks to conduct a case study analysis of the relationship between collective identity and memetic media by utilizing a quasi-natural experiment on Reddit r/place 2022 not as a driver but as a medium of expression of both. This research uses the qualitative case study method and the Place Atlas Initiative website as a data collector with two units of analysis, namely the work of The Night Watch and the flag of the United States, which then show the interaction between collective identity and memetic media in it. In general, Sense of belonging is the main motivator for individuals to behave in accordance with the collective agency of their group identity. This collective identity is formed through the 'commonality' of attributes/experiences shared by each individual in the group. In accordance with the duality of memetic structures, the cultural products of these groups are then expressed by adapting them to the r/place 2022 canvas while still preserving the main essence of it.
